Pregnant in Costa Rica

Surprise!  We’re having a baby in Costa Rica!  I am currently about 5.5 months along, and our little one is due in May.  We arrived about a week ago, with our first appointment with an obstetrician at the CIMA hospital arranged beforehand.  Yesterday, we were finally able to have our anatomy scan. Some of the sonogram with Dra. Kim is included in Friday’s vlog: I was very excited for this appointment, as I’d only had one visit with a midwife so far…

Moving our family to Costa Rica.

Well, we’re at it again.  And by “it,” I mean relocating to another country.  The winters of Vermont (where we spent most of 2016) are pretty harsh, and for a few reasons, we thought it best to head back to sunny, beautiful Costa Rica for another chapter.  We’ve rented a home in Atenas for the next six months, and have no specific plan afterwards. I’ve been hit with the same rush of intense happiness that Costa Rica always welcomes me with…

Bridge in San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica

I didn’t know how we would feel after spending two weeks in Costa Rica this May.  Life took a surprising turn once our grand European adventure and 2015 came to a close.  We had assumed we would move back to the land of La Pura Vida, and even purchased one-way tickets to get our freezing faces back into the sunshine.  But, somehow a curiosity for New England redirected our path.  We purchased a fixer-upper in Vermont, a place we had little–well, actually zero–experience…

Girl on Playa Manzanillo, Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.

After two years of exploring in Costa Rica, we decided it was finally time to rest our eyes on the Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo.  I suppose we had formerly tossed this destination up on the “someday” list because of the rumored danger of Limón (an area we’d have to pass through) and because of the distance we’d need to travel from our mountains in the Central Valley.  But, this was an adventure we felt was worth taking, and we were beyond rewarded for our…

Horse back riding in Puerto Viejo

Along the southeast edge of Costa Rica, a tropical eden resides.  There are many different versions of “paradise” generously scattered throughout this flourishing Central American country, but the balmy locale of Puerto Viejo really lives up to the exotic wanderer’s dreams.  The thick rainforest, bursting with unique wildlife, essentially pours right onto the smooth coast of the aquamarine Caribbean sea.  See it for your own eyes–better yet, ride along it as I did with my new friend Bruce Walker, of Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures. Bruce is…

Rio Celeste with kids

Before leaving Costa Rica for some time, we have a few destinations that would just be a shame to miss.  At the tippy top of this list is Rio Celeste, a waterfall known to be an extremely majestic shade of aquamarine-torquoise blue.  Tenorio Volcano National Park, where this picturesque water flows, is just above the massive Lake Arenal.  We had experience driving around this lake, so we thought we’d just head there and then “ask around” for how to get to…
